Travel the world, explore, discover what’s behind the corner. It’s in the genes of humans to see beyond the familiar neighborhood and known to leave trails. This is all well and good, but how do you get from point A to B? The possibilities are extensive, and depending on the distance, the personal requirements you set your carriage, the place where you want to go, time, and many other factors … Here are some cheap ways to get around the world.
Run
The oldest transport: your own two legs. These are the most reliable, and can be virtually any terrain. However, there are two drawbacks. It dares to go slow sometimes, and you also look tired. The big advantage is that it can go much cheaper. Although this should be balanced when you consider that every day you should have food and shelter.
Cycling
Still a very cheap transport. All you need is a good bike and a good condition. Daily distances can thus be increased to 100 to 150km. You will, however, also get tired. Also, your back may begin to work against.
Recumbent
A variant of the previous one, only slightly higher speeds are possible. The bike itself is a whole lot more expensive and has some practice to get the hang of. Distances of 150 to 180km per day are certainly feasible.
Canoe
For if you should go along very watery area. This is actually not a real vehicle, since the paddle itself is a part of the holiday. But you hit it forward, of course.
Bus
This is the cheapest way of transport. There are certain companies that provide bus services. And as you come in less populated areas, the tours are getting longer and relatively cheaper. This way you can easy do 1000 km in one day. The disadvantage is that they do not ride every day driving everywhere.
Train
The train is usually only recommended for last-minute transportation, because then you have the high speed lines. If you are on time, it is usually cheaper for short distances like flies, but for longer distances, you should watch this. If the connections go smoothly, you may also expect 1000km per day with regular trains, and 1500 km per day with high speed trains.
Plane
With a little luck and you can search to find real gems that willcost you less than 10 euros 1000km far. Since you lose the most time at the airport, the rule is that the longer you run, the less time you need. You can fly around the world in 20 hrs, but a flight of 1.5 hour will make you loose more time on the airport than in the plane.
Ship
On the planet there is 70% water, so boating seems not such a bad option. But it’s slow, and moreover it is still expensive. A cruise ship is completely out of the question, and only an option if you could get a job there. But you will have to work hard, earn almost nothing, and very few can see the beautiful ocean. A ferry can be useful to back large tracts of land to cut off what you otherwise have had to drive around.
And then there is third option: sailing on a freighter. Although this seems a great idea in the beginning, the cost is quite disappointing. Count on about 100 euros per day, although I’m not sure if this is per cabin or per person. If the latter is ultimately too bad, 50 euros per person would be about the same as what you spend your day with a two man driving the car (gasoline), 2 x 1 night eats and sleeps.
Cars
With your own car travel is really only beneficial if you have enough people to share petrol or diesel. And of course you need a car in the first place. Generally you can count on you doing over 100km 1h, this can sometimes be faster, sometimes slower, but taken over a whole day, this is a very solid average. It depends on how rushed you are, and how many drivers there are, how far you’ll get per day.
It is also very important to have your car checked before the trip. Perhaps it will need some things to repair and you will probably need a good tires, like Nitto tyres, to make sure you won’t stay in some strange land without any chances to get home!
Hopping trains
This is only for the adventurous among us. The idea is that on a stationary or very slow-moving freight train you just jump on. Also very dangerous and prohibited. Long distances are possible per day and the train ride a bit, but the same applies for the train in a depot, and is that still all day.
